We Are Many (Legion)
Mark 5 & Luke 8
Summary
Covered in Mark 5:1–20 and Luke 8:26–39 is Jesus overcoming the spirit of Legion. Stepping straight off the boat, Jesus from Nazareth drastically changes the entire life of a Gentile man who’s been all but dead in body for who knows how long. While it’s often the point of our focus, this testimony isn’t solely about one man’s deliverance but a prfound portrait of spiritual realities on multiple levels.
As we inspect the journey, the man, the town, and the conditions around him, we uncover profound theological and personal implications. It is a conflicting and challenging message—one that reveals both the cost of freedom and the unsettling nature of Christ’s power. In this encounter, we see the collision of divine authority with human resistance, the tension between transformation and rejection, and the unexpected ways the kingdom of God disrupts the familiar.
